2nd generation Turbocharged Civic Type R unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show
Say 'Hello!' to the latest, second gen turbocharged Civic Type R, which Singapore readers will be happy to note, will be sold through the official distributor channels here. The turbocharged VTEC 2.0-litre has been tuned to deliver 315bhp and 400Nm, with transmission duties handled by a six-speed manual gearbox, which also features a 'complimentary' rev-matching to let novices sound like veteran drivers, although the main reason is to help stabilise the car during down-shifts.
If you recall, Honda's iconic Civic Type R was revealed in 'prototype' guise at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, which is based on the tenth generation Civic hatchback. True to that sneak peek, the production model features muscular body styling, motorsports-inspired elements and an aggressive, but functional, aero-kit. Apart from the carbonfibre front lip and rear diffuser, matching side-skirts run the length of the wheelbase between the front and rear 20-inch footwear, which are finished in piano black with a racy red pin-stripe running around each rim.
Honda's famous red 'H' badge - which adorns all Type R models - sits above a new air vent at the nose of the car. There's now a new intake on the bonnet, with an air scoop sited centrally in a trapezoidal recess.
Honda has clearly improved upon the dynamics of the first-gen turbo type R. The latest model takes the lighter, more rigid body shell of the new Civic hatchback and adds further use of adhesive in key areas. Compared to the previous Type R, torsional rigidity is further improved by 38 per cent. The suspension has been revised to reduce torque steer on the front-wheel drive hot-hatch, as well as to provide more incisive responses.
To cater to the varied sensibilities of the buying demographic, an enhanced selection of driving modes are available: A new ‘Comfort’ setting sits alongside ‘Sport’ and the track-focused ‘+R’ modes. Each setting affects the adaptive dampers, steering force, gear shift feeling and throttle response.
Production of the new five-door Civic Type R hatchback is expected to start in summer 2017 at Honda of the UK Manufacturing (HUM) in Swindon – the global manufacturing hub for the 10th generation Civic hatchback. The Type R will be exported around the world, including Japan and for the first time in the Type R's history, the US.
