Volvo's Q5 rival gets Geneva debut. Sweden does it again
The new Volvo XC60 ought to be good. First, because it shares a lot with the really very good V, S and XC90, and second, because it’s a hugely important car for the brand. Volvo says the existing XC60 is the “bestselling premium mid-size SUV in Europe”, and that in the nine years it’s been on sale, nearly a million have been sold. It also says the XC60 “represents around 30 per cent of Volvo’s total global sales”. That’s many, many cars.
Good thing it’s a looker, then. Like a stubbier XC90, with seating for five instead of seven. The portrait touchscreen you get in other Volvos gets a minor update for better graphics and “improved usability”. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto remain optional.
Volvo’s also keen to tout its broad range of safety kit. It calls the XC60 “one of the safest cars ever made” thanks to the Steer Assist system, which helps drivers avoid accidents obstacles, even with oncoming cars. Pilot Assist, which does the steering, accelerating and braking on well-market roads at speeds of up to 81mph, is an option.
All engines are 4cyl. The T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain from the XC, V and S90 will make for the quickest XC60. 400hp means 0-100km/h in 5.3secs. Most will buy the 187hp D4 or 232hp D5. A 251hp T5 petrol will also be available in Britain, but not the 316hp turbo- and supercharged T6. Boo.
