Tesla-based electric racing series confirmed by FIA

Electric Production Car Series is go! 20 drivers to race 778bhp P100Ds. Plus: DRIFTING

The FIA has officially sanctioned a new electric racing series. It is called the Electric Production Car Series, and as you can see from the above pic, will exclusively use the Tesla Model S.

Which means it’ll be fast. Because the Model S in question is the all-singing, all-conquering P100D. Electric GT Holdings Inc – the series organisers – said that just last week, the race-prepped Model S passed its official FIA crash test.

There’s a ‘three-heat’ qualifying format, followed by a 60km day race and a 60km dusk race. 20 drivers will line up to race the cars, which run on bespoke Pirellis and feature Alcon brakes, R53 suspension, composite bodywork and a chunk of power. 778bhp to be precise, or 585kW.

That’s not all. Once the race is finished, the top two drivers - along with a pair of fan-voted drivers - will face-off “at suitable circuits” in a drifting competition. Here, the four must complete a series of drifting challenges, and the winner walks away with a further three championship points. Frankly, this series couldn’t start soon enough.Electric GT Holdings Inc boss Mark Gemmell said: “With a three-heat qualifying system and two EPCS races, plus our eKarting and eSports rounds, fans will have a lot of racing action to get excited about.”

Like the sound of 20 mad Tesla P100Ds knocking ten bells out of each other, followed by a drift-off? Yeah, thought so.
