All-electric Maseratis are coming in 2021

By topgear, 24 January 2020

Maserati has been offering us snippets of information and promises about electrification for at least of couple of years now. In fact, we’ve been waiting patiently since it confirmed that 2014’s V8-engined Alfieri concept would definitely make production as both a full EV and a plug-in hybrid.

The beans were eventually spilled as it confirmed the death of the current generation GranTurismo, with Maser stating that the big GT’s replacement (and the GranCabrio) would be its first models to “adopt 100 per cent electric solutions.”

At the time both were slated for launch in 2020, but it now seems as though that’s been pushed back a year. Seen the video above? MMXXI = 2021 (no, of course we didn’t just Google that).

Maserati also says it has fitted ‘experimental vehicles’ with the new powertrain and is currently working on a unique sound for its EVs. What do you think of the current whine?

When ready, the GranTurismo and GranCabrio replacements will be built in Turin, with a new ‘super sports model’ scheduled for the Modena factory - the Alfieri perhaps? It’s definitely happening then, Maserati is going electric. Thoughts?
