It wasn't even that long a time ago, nor even in a galaxy that far, far away, as Singapore played host to double headlining acts: Porsche unveiled its all-electric Taycan, as well as offered a glimpse of the new Porsche x Star Wars spacecraft that will feature in the last film in the nine-part Skywalker saga, The Rise of Skywalker.

The setting was the The Float @ Marina Bay, which was transformed into a space-port launchpad, complete with Star Wars cosplayers in full-costumed regalia, with an introduction to the Porsche x Star Wars collaboration from Mr. Michael Mauer  – Vice President Style Porsche at Porsche AG – and Mr. Doug Chiang, VP Executive Creative Director, Lucasfilm.

“Designing the Taycan was one of the most exciting tasks, because the only certainty was that it had to be recognisable as a Porsche at first glance. And by pursuing the strategy of making it the sportiest in the segment, we have defined a new architecture for purely electric vehicles. Just like what the 911 has achieved, my vision is that the Taycan will become an icon of this new era, a synonym for a purely electric sportscar,” Michael said of the Taycan.

At present, the Taycan range includes the 4S that was recently launched at the 2019 LA Motor Show, the Turbo and the Turbo S. At time of writing, prices are expected to span an estimated S$500k for the 4S to S$750k for the Turbo S, all without COE and options.

The design alliance between Porsche and Lucasfilm is an unprecedented one that has produced a fantasy starship for the upcoming Star Wars film, the final episode of the Skywalker saga. Mauer and Doug Chiang explained the design process and presented design sketches of the spacecraft highlighting the combined Porsche and Star Wars design DNA.

There's a certain kinship in the way the love and lore of Porsche and the Star Wars saga is passed down from father/mother to son/daughter, thus seducing a new generation of fans, and the Taycan is well-charged to be the beginning of a new episode in Porsche's success story.

It's somewhat apt, and the stuff of dreams come true for us fanboys that two cult cultural icons, which are living legends in their respective industries and have fired the desires and imaginations of adults and children alike for decades, are finally united in a common project.

Chiang said, “Although one brand is placed in a fantasy universe and one in the real world, it’s interesting that both are defined very much by their iconic design principle. The basic challenge of the design brief was to design a starship that would both be true to the Star Wars universe and Porsche design DNA.”

"The Taycan links our heritage to the future. It is a fascinating sports car with exciting driving dynamics, performance and technology – and like every Porsche ever built, it comes with a soul. Something you will feel immediately, once you get behind the steering wheel," said Mr. Arthur Willmann, Managing Director of Porsche Asia Pacific (pictured right).

"Asia Pacific is an important sales region for Porsche – with a continuously growing customer and fan base. With the Taycan, we are entering a new era and this spirit fits perfectly with the iconic Star Wars brand and the joint event here in Singapore," says Mr. Matthias Becker, Vice President Region Overseas and Emerging Markets of Porsche AG (pictured left).
