The new Alpina D3 S is predictably gorgeous

Boy have we got a treat for you today. Alpina has finally given us a look at the diesel versions of its fantastic BMW 3 Series, and both the sedan and estate are every bit as enticing as you might expect.

The D3 S is based on the M340d xDrive, so under the bonnet is BMW’s 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six diesel, connected to a 48-volt mild-hybrid system for smooth power delivery.

As standard that means 340hp and 700Nm of torque, but we all knew that wouldn’t be enough for Alpina.

In both Sedan and Touring forms, the D3 S has an extremely healthy 360hp and 730Nm of torque. Mmmm, torque.

As a result, top speeds are 273km/h for the sedan and 270km/h for the dog-carrier. 0-100km/h times remain as standard, though, meaning 4.6 and 4.8 seconds respectively. Not slow.

Power is sent to all four wheels (with rear bias) through an adapted version of BMW’s 8spd auto gearbox, while a new Comfort+ shift mode means gear changes should be “almost imperceptible”. New Alpina-specific aluminium paddles are an option too.

Then there’s the suspension, which is carried over from the petrol-powered B3 and includes new Eibach springs to complement the three variable modes – Comfort+, Comfort and Sport.

Alpina has never been one for rock-hard ride quality. It reckons this setup is “more balanced and harmonious” than on the standard 3 Series.

The brakes, on the other hand, are big four-piston units from the B5 Bi-Turbo.

Also carried over from the B3, though, are the looks. Yes please.

Both sets of classic Alpina wheels are available once again (choosing which to go for is presumably like picking your favourite child) and there are lovely aero addendums at the front and rear.
