If you’re not familiar with Porsche model codes, probably best look away now. But if you are, this ought to interest you. The last 991-generation 911 has rolled off the production line, and for maximum razzmatazz, it was an example of the near-S$1.3m 911 Speedster that brought the curtain down.
It’s a notable occasion for an array of reasons. Firstly, the 992 has been in production a year, so that’s quite some overlap between the two. Secondly, the 991 will likely be viewed as quite a transformative chapter in 911 history.
It saw the hardcore GT3 model go paddleshift only, and then back to manual when everyone complained. It saw the introduction of one of the greatest road-going Porsches ever, the mighty 911 R.
It also saw the introduction of turbocharging to regular Carrera models, while the ultimate 911 turbo – the GT2 RS – nudged the 700bhp mark and got tangled in one of the more exciting Nürburgring laptime battles. A modestly tuned version ended up taking the outright road car record.
The millionth ever 911 was also a 991. And nearly a quarter of those million have been the outgoing generation, as Porsche tells us it’s the most successful 911 yet with 233,540 sold. Given ever-stringent CO2 rules, we’d be surprised if the 992 manages to surpass that.
So three cheers for the 991. Unless model codes bore you, of course.
