2022, 1 June - Lexus premieres the fifth-generation RX luxury crossover, offering buyers a broad range of electrified variants. The new RX is built on the GA-K architecture, which also underpins the transverse-engined ES and NX.
There are two non-electrified powertrain options, the RX 350 FF and AWD models. Both are powered by a 2.4 litre turbocharged engine. The AWD version of the RX 350 delivers a front-biased 75:25 torque split.
The rest of the range receives some form of electrification, beginning with the RX 350h HEV E-Four (AWD) and FF (Front Drive), both of which rely on a 2.5 litre engine. The rear wheels of the E-Four are driven by a rear motor.
The RX 450h+ PHEV parks a 18.1kWh lithium ion battery under the floor, which powers front and rear motors, and is paired with a 2.5 litre inline-four engine.
The range-topping RX 500h, combines a 2.4 litre turbocharged engine with a DIRECT 4 hybrid electric system (first seen on he RZ). An AISIN-developed eAxle motor provides the drive at the rear. It also features Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS) for added manoeuvrability and stability.
Lexus has promised better drive dynamics with the new RX, with improved weight distribution, and weight reduction. Refinement is also a priority here, among their efforts, there is improved door sealing, reduced hood vibration and the optimised placement of sound-absorbing materials. 2.4 litre variants feature Active Noise Control, which helps with the elimination of the noise characteristic of four-cylinder turbocharged engines.
Styling-wise, the Lexus RX receives widened front and rear treads, and a planted stance. The base of the A-pillar has also been pushed backward to emphasise the elongated hood, visually moving the cabin rearward. The new spindle grille design has evolved, in an expression, which Lexus calls the ‘Spindle Body’. The body colour is brought down to the lower edge of the Lexus emblem.
The cockpit design is based on he Tazuna concept (rein in Japanese), which Lexus claims - draws upon this articulate, synergic relationship and reinterprets the partnership between human and machine with an intuitive layout that forges a deeper mutual understanding through a seamless merging of Omotenashi-influenced design and cutting-edge technologies.
In all, there are five interior themes available, which includes a newly developed Dark Sepia which also debuts a Black Herring Bone Pattern Film, based on the colour black. There is also a new Medium Brown Bamboo theme.
There are a total of ten body colours available, which includes Sonic iridium, Terrane Khaki and a newly developed metallic coat - Sonic Copper.
Buyers in Singapore can expect the first shipments of the Lexus RX to reach us at the end of 2022. There is no official word about pricing at press time.
