Volkswagen announces first details of the next-generation Tiguan

Singapore - Volkswagen has announced the first details of the third-generation Tiguan SUV. The Tiguan is important, as it is VeeDub’s best selling car worldwide. It will be based on an evolution of the MQB architecture, which currently underpins the present car. The first cars in Singapore with the new MQB evo were the Volkswagen Golf 8 and the fourth-generation Skoda Octavia (check out David’s Desaru drive with both cars).

Across markets, there will be TDI, TSI, eTSI and eHybrid power options, all of which will be matched with dual-clutch gearboxes. For Singapore, the news is that we will receive the eTSI mild-hybrid version. The new Tiguan is just 3cm longer than the previous car, but boot space here, has increased by 33 litres to 648 litres.

Some of the new features include IQ.LIGHT HD matrix headlights - These were jointly developed for both the Tiguan and the flagship Touareg SUV. They are equipped with a large number of micro LEDs, designed to illuminate the road better.

A re-worked operating system allows for more customisation of functions on the 15-inch infotainment touchscreen. There is also a rotary Driving Experience Control, complete with its very own mini screen, allowing you to toggle ambient lighting colours, radio volume and the car’s drive mode. Volkswagen has also confirmed that there will be an optional acoustic package, which they say is designed to provide premium-class noise comfort. Speaking about comfort, there are premium ergoActive front seats, which can be fine-tuned by way of a four-way lumbar support adjustment. Adding to more front seat features, there is also a pneumatic 10-chamber pressure point massage function, embedded in the backrests

One of the Tiguan’s main highlights is the electronically controlled suspension system, termed DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control), which we first saw in the Golf GTI. The DCC is fitted standard with the Vehicle Dynamics Manager. In-all the system is able to carry out braking interventions, and performs adjustments to the shock absorbers on individual wheels. While VW states that handling, precision and stability is enhanced, and this can be felt on-board, with increased comfort, and significantly improved cornering ability.

There is also an optional DCC Pro system, which comes equipped with two-valve shock absorbers. Beyond what the regular DCC does, the DCC Pro also manages control of the electronic differential locks (XDS), and lateral dynamics components of the controlled shock absorbers.

"State-of-the-art technology components interact perfectly in the MQB evo: a new generation of plug-in hybrid drives with electric ranges of up to 100 kilometres, probably the best active chassis control in its segment, premium interior quality and an equally new and intuitive infotainment system deliver what drivers expect from Volkswagen." said Kai Grünitz, Member of the Brand Board of Management responsible for Technical Development.

For Singapore, we can expect to see the car in Q1 of 2024, starting with the eTSI model.
