Good news: you could be shagging your tyres at the upcoming motorsports complex at Nusajaya Iskandar in as little as three years' time. The 4.5km-long racing circuit and karting track will both open first as part of Phase One of the project, according to FASTrack Sdn Bhd.

The company also announced today that Hermann Tilke ' he of modern F1 circuitry fame ' will be doing the main doodling of the track's layout.

'This is going to be one of the most exciting motorsports concepts I have ever been invited to work with,' he says. 'I truly believe we can build a unique track for motorsports entertainment and cannot wait to get started.'

Modern 'Tilkedromes' have been criticised as being boring ' three-time F1 champ Sir Jackie Stewart famously accused them all of being 'carbon copies' of one another, while Hans Joachim-Stuck once told CarBuyer that his friend's tracks did lack a certain added edge.

Tilke's circuits also have been pointed out as featuring run-off areas so large that drivers can get away with making mistakes, but that latter point is a big plus if you ask us, especially if you've seen our editorial team drive.

Still, the site offers 60m of elevation change, which should make for an exciting layout. A good circuit has to go up and down (and not just left and right), if you ask us.

'It is not every day that someone has the opportunity to build a race circuit, and we intend to have a track that everyone will be keen to drive and talk about,' says Barry Kan, the chief executive of FASTrack.

Apart from the main circuit and a 1.5km-long karting track, the 300-acre facility will also feature lighting for night races, space for advanced driver training and even areas for off-roading.

The whole shebang is expected to be ready by 2018, and is just five minutes' drive from the Second Link at Tuas; clear customs on the Johor side, get past the first toll booth and you're pretty much there.

FASTrack Iskandar also plans to include car showrooms, service and spare parts centres, as well as retail, restaurant and hotel areas. Interestingly, there will be bonded garages so you'll be able to keep tax-free cars there. At last, you can buy that Enzo or Carrera GT.
