The second Ferrari 250 GTO ever built is up for grabs

British Ferrari dealer makes its play for your Christmas list early with stunning ex-racer GTO

Classic car prices. Toppy, aren’t they? In the last decade everything from air-cooled Porsche 911s to Honda NSXs that Ayrton Senna may potentially have sneezed near once have skyrocketed in value. Even Escort rally cars are the preserve of lottery winners, it seems.

At the very peak of motoring hero prices is the Ferrari 250 GTO, the impossibly beautiful Sixties hardtop racer of which just 39 left Maranello’s gates. The current auction record, set back in 2012, stands at $38,115,000 (S$53,902,233) for chassis number 3505GT. Well, records are made to be broken…

Perhaps this blue example could do the job. It’s a 1962 250 GTO, chassis number 3387, which the exceedingly knowledgeable among you will immediately spot as the second 250 GTO built. And though it went on to live an illustrious competition career, it actually began life as a common test hack for Ferrari, helping the engineers tweak the set-up and note changes for the following cars. Every other 250 GTO owes a nod of respect to this very car.

Among the highlights of its motorsport career, this NART blue car was originally registered in New York, and finished second overall and first in class at the 1962 Sebring 24 Hours. It was repainted red for much of its life, before having its original livery restored in 1997. Doesn’t look too bad for a 55 year-old, right?

The car’s being offered for sale by UK-based Ferrari specialists Talalcrest and, predictably, while there’s a wealth of history and details about the car itself, there is a number conspicuous by its absence: a price. 250 GTO values are always telephone number figures, but it’d have been fun to know just how many jackpot wins it’d take to put this little slice of history in the hypothetical garage…
