Big Bangs 2014 [COTY2014] : Cars of the Year 2014 Intro

By davidkhoo, 12 December 2014

Singapore - Most folks mark off dates in relation to important holiday milestones throughout the year, but for the petrolheads, we’d like to think that our annual Cars of the Year feature helps draw the year to a close on a happy, high note.

Lists of any sort tend to be the subjects of intense scrutiny and furious contention, especially since any and everybody else and their bandwagon of cronies seem to think they can do a better job.

In such draconian times, it's not easy being a petrolhead and ‘fast’ is often confused with ‘fun', with too much grip preferred over something that’s loose and slippery.

We’re from the generation of petrolheads that straddles the watershed between the tail-end of the last breed of automotive greats from the 80s and 90s, as well as the new breed of leaner, greener and meaner A-to-B street-fighters that have become the norm for ‘sportscars’ these days.

A look through our unapologetically performance-biased list will throw up some exotics, which form the predictable and expected backbone of the gathering.

But we’ve also tried to temper this with more eclectic choices that are intended to provoke the sensibilities as they demonstrate that ‘fun’ cars can come in all shapes, sizes and most importantly, prices.

The point is to proposition and challenge our readers with compelling alternatives that may require venturing off the beaten path and well out of one’s comfort zone.

An open-mind is essential, so armchair critics who prefer to live out other people’s tired old cliches need not apply.

As we like to say, drive it before you diss it...
